Report cases of medical negligence, NMA urges victims

Dr Nicholas Baamlong, Chairman, FCT chapter of NMA, told newsmen in Abuja that due to ignorance, some victims of medical negligence had failed to seek redress.

Baamlong said that although it was a common trend in parts of the country to attribute cases of such negligence to an act of God, “there is provision for medical negligence reporting’’.

He said the NMA disciplinary committee had the mandate to investigate any reported case of medical negligence, and could present such case to the Medical and Dental Council.

“The Medical and Dental Council has a tribunal that presides over cases of either negligence, malpractice or all other offences.

“It actually carries the statue of a High Court in a court system,’’ he said.

He listed penalties which could be handed out to offenders to include seizure of certificate, withdrawal of licence, or caution.
